AltSendme
AltSendme is a frictionless, open-source, peer-to-peer file transfer desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux that enables secure, encrypted, and unlimited data sharing without cloud storage.
AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform desktop application designed to facilitate peer-to-peer file transfers between users anywhere in the world. Built on the robust Iroh networking stack, the application aims to provide a frictionless and private alternative to cloud-based storage services. By eliminating the need for intermediate storage, AltSendme ensures that data is transferred directly from one computer to another, providing a secure and efficient way to share content without the constraints or privacy concerns associated with traditional upload-to-cloud methods.
The application serves as a direct, encrypted tool for sending files and directories of any size. It leverages advanced networking techniques, including NAT traversal and hole punching, to establish connections between devices even when they are behind firewalls or different network structures. This technical foundation allows users to maintain control over their data, ensuring that files are never stored on a third-party server during the transit process.
Some of the key features are:
- End-to-End Encryption: Utilizes modern security standards such as TLS 1.3 and QUIC to ensure that only the sender and the recipient can access the transmitted data.
- Unlimited Transfers: Supports the movement of files and folders of any size or format, with no imposed limits on data volume.
- Peer-to-Peer Architecture: Facilitates direct device-to-device transfers, bypassing cloud storage entirely to ensure data privacy and potentially higher speeds.
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Available as a native desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.
- Optimized Performance: Leverages QUIC over UDP to achieve high transfer speeds, capable of saturating connections up to 4Gbps, with built-in support for pause and resume functionality.
- No Account Requirement: Enables immediate use without the need for registration, login, or personal profile management.
- Integrity Verification: Performs automated checks on both ends to ensure that files remain intact and verified during the entire transfer process.
To operate the tool, users simply drop a file or folder into the AltSendme interface, which then generates a unique one-time share code known as a ticket. This ticket is shared with the recipient via any preferred communication channel, such as email, text, or instant messaging. Once the recipient pastes the ticket into their instance of the application, the encrypted connection is established, and the transfer commences immediately. While an internet connection is generally required for devices located on different networks to facilitate hole punching, users on the same local area network can perform transfers without full external internet access.
Some common use cases include:
- Remote Collaboration: Enabling team members or colleagues to share large project files, media assets, or documents securely and quickly without uploading them to shared cloud drives.
- Secure Personal Backups: Moving sensitive personal data between two computers owned by the same user with the assurance of end-to-end encryption.
- Quick Media Sharing: Sending high-resolution images or large video files to friends or family members without having to deal with file size limitations or account creation on third-party hosting websites.
